Water Filters and Hygiene Training Reduce Illness at Primary School by 82%

In August 2012, the headmistress of Chirara Primary School approached Bopoma Villages concerned about the high incidence of diarrhea among her students and asked if her school could receive water filters.

Within a few weeks, our team came to the school and installed water filters and Tippy Taps and provided teachers and students with training on basic hygiene and hand-washing.

Prior to the installation of the filters, 120 students reported that they were suffering from diarrhea. When our team returned for a follow-up visit in November 2012, they found both the filters and tippy-taps in regular use and were delighted to learn that only 22 students had diarrhea. This represents a remarkable 82% improvement in the children’s health just two short months!
